America and Israel: the end of a special relationship[]

 28 Mar 2010

Israeli tanks left the Gaza Strip yesterday after the most violent clash in the Hamas-ruled enclave in 14 months ended with two soldiers and at least one Palestinian killed. The bloodshed followed weeks of unrest as attempts to bring Israelis and Palestinians back to negotiations stalled.

The fall-out between America and Israel is a serious threat to world peace, says Benny Morris.

Last night Arab League officials warned of a complete failure in the peace process, and spoke of alternative plans to "face Israel". Israel's "inner cabinet" discussed how to rescue its relations with the United States after the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was snubbed by a frustrated Barack Obama in Washington last week.

The split between Israel and the US comes at a critical time as Iran's nuclear ambitions grow steadily nearer to being realised.

Here BENNY MORRIS explains why this is a threat to world peace. Without doubt, the Middle East's rogue or terrorist leaders, from Iran's Mahmoud Ahmedinejad to Hizbollah's Hassan Nasrallah to Hamas's Khalid Mashal, are rubbing their hands with glee.

The year-long rift between the Netanyahu and Obama administrations over Israel's settlement policy in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is threatening to turn into a political rupture – just as Israel faces an existential threat which it needs every ounce of American support
to counter. fullstory
